CBG is another one of the cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. CBG is short for “cannabigerol,” which is found in lower quantities than CBD or THC. The thing that makes CBG special is that it’s the base molecule for all other cannabinoids. THC, CBD, and the rest are simply modified forms of CBG, which is the foundation. And like all cannabinoids, it includes a molecular structure that binds to your body’s CB1 and CB2 receptors. To top it all off, it’s also an anti-inflammatory.

Another major difference between the two is their effect on your energy level. CBD normally has a calming, soothing effect, while CBG has an energizing, focusing effect. This mental difference is mirrored in the way they act within the body. CBG has more effect on the brain, with some research suggesting that it has powerful neuroprotective properties. CBD, on the other hand, tends to act more on your muscles, providing relaxation.
Additional studies suggest that CGB may have antibacterial properties, including the ability to kill antibiotic-resistant bacteria, such as MRSA. Studies in rats show that CBG may reduce the growth of cancerous polyps within the colon. There are even more studies in the works, including studies of CGB’s effects on glaucoma, inflammatory bowel disease, and overactive bladder.
CBD vs CBG – Which Is Better For Anxiety?
Anxiety is a word that people use a lot these days, so let’s step back and talk about the clinical definition. Real, clinical anxiety involves not just a sense of unease or discomfort. It also has physical symptoms, including shallow breathing, rapid heartbeat, upset stomach, difficulty focusing, and muscle tension. In other words, it includes the physical symptoms of our fight or flight response.
Because anxiety is both mental and physical, any anti-anxiety treatment will need to address both aspects. CBD has shown the ability to promote mental relaxation, as well as to relax your muscles.
That said, CBG has a lot of the same effects. It stimulates Alpha-2 receptors, which helps reduce trembling and muscle tension. It binds to the same endocannabinoid receptors as CBD, working within the brain as well. Finally, it’s more effective at promoting GABA absorption than either CBD or THC. Without getting too far into the weeds, GABA is an amino acid that slows down other neurotransmitters. So better GABA absorption means less panic and more tranquility.

Can You Combine CBD and CBG?
Absolutely! CBD and CBG are both helpful for anxiety, but CBD makes you feel sleepy, while CBG makes you feel more wakeful. If you take both at the same time, you’ll receive the same anxiety relief, but the sedative and stimulant effects will cancel each other out. As a result, you’ll still be you, just with less anxiety.
As we said at the outset, CBG research is still in its early stages. As a result, there is little information about potential side effects, or interactions with prescription and non-prescription medications.
Another potential challenge is that CBG can be difficult to find. Even in states where there are legal cannabis dispensaries, it’s most often found in combination with THC, which many people prefer to avoid. One possible alternative is to use a full-spectrum CBD product, which will include a small amount of CBG.
