Different Options to Take Care of Elderly Parents

Sydney has consistently been included in The Mercer Study’s Top Ten Best Cities to live based on life quality. It is not surprising because Sydney is considered the best city in Australia and its only global city. Likewise, Sydney’s good governance has led to a great quality of living for the city’s residents. Thus, Sydney residents can live for a much longer period which has caused a significant growth in the city’s elderly population. As of 2021, the elderly population of Sydney represents around 15 per cent of the total population.

If you have a family member that belongs to the elderly population, there is a high chance that this person will need elderly care in the future. You can help take care of them by finding an institution offering aged care courses in Sydney and joining the program. On the other hand, there are a lot of options that you can choose from to take care of elderly members of your family, depending on the severity of their needs.

Assisted Living Facilities

You may choose to relocate your elderly parents to an assisted living centre if their medical care and needs are far beyond what you can provide. The elderly suffering from serious medical conditions such as Alzheimer’s and Dementia needs to be monitored 24/7.

Move-In With You

If your elderly parent’s needs are not too serious, you may choose to have him or her move in with you. It will help if you consider finding an institution offering aged care courses in Sydney and complete one to understand how to care for them. One benefit of letting your elderly parent move in with you is that they will be around other family members and not be lonely, especially if their spouse has already passed away.

Home Care Services

If both your parents are still alive, they may wish to live in the comforts of their homes rather than move in with you or relocate to a facility. In such cases, it would be best to allow them to stay in their homes. However, you can provide them with home care services by hiring private nurses or health care practitioners to regularly visit them and provide care for them in their homes. If hiring private nurses is too expensive, you can hire the services of a residential care worker who has completed an aged care course and has made elderly care their profession. You could also change your home care service for the better by partnering with a CDPAP agency. Through the CDPAP programme, they’ll give you the power to run your own home care. Whatever you opt for, just make sure that the specialist you choose has the necessary medical certification in BLS, meaning that he’s able to react in emergency situations.

Companionship

There are times when your elderly parent is still fully capable of taking care of themselves and being independent. If this is the case, you may hire a companion for them instead. An elderly care companion will have also completed an aged care course required for the job and also trained to keep a close eye on your parents without limiting their independence.

Aging is inevitable. All people will go through the process of aging sooner or later. When this happens, people’s ability to take care of themselves is greatly affected. Elderly people will also have higher chances of getting sick and developing serious medical conditions. As a relative, it is best to be prepared to care for your parents once they cannot take care of themselves any longer. However, you should also be aware of your capabilities and know when you can no longer handle the responsibility.
