What Is Rotational Motion?

Rotational motion is defined as the motion in which the object moves around a circular path with a fixed orbit. The other way of defining rotational motion is that all the particles of an object have a circular motion such that their angular velocity is common and has a fixed point.

Before understanding the essential terms that are related to rotational motion, we should know that the rotational motion can be either clockwise or anticlockwise. And the energy associated with the rotational motion is known as rotational energy.

  • Torque is defined as the magnitude of the force that is applied to the body such that it is away from the application point. Torque can be observed while pushing the door. It is easier to push the door at the ends than at its hinges.
  •  Moment of inertia is defined as the quantity determining the amount of torque required for the rotation of an object. This is also known as rotational inertia.
  • Angular momentum is defined as the product of angular velocity and the moment of inertia.

What Is The Relation Between Circular Motion And Rotational Motion?

The relation between circular motion and rotational motion is that circular motion is a type of rotational motion. The major difference between the two is that in a circular motion, the body moves in a fixed direction whereas, in a rotational motion, the body follows any curved path.

What Is The Difference Between Linear Motion And Rot-Motion?

The difference between linear motion and rotational motion is that in linear motion the body moves in a straight path whereas, in rotational motion, the body moves along the curved path.

The other difference between linear motion and rotational motion is that in linear motion displacement, acceleration, velocity, force, and momentum are the attributes. While in rotational motion torque, angular momentum, and moment of inertia are the attributes.

  • Somersaults done by the gymnasts is another example of rotational motion.
